Rhode Island Bridge сlosed due to dangerous problem

Authorities have discovered a critical structural failure in one of the busiest bridges in Rhode Island.

On the evening of December 11, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) announced that the bridge had “critical failure of some of the original 1960s bridge components.”

The decision was made to close its western side to begin renovation work, which is expected to take several months. The Washington Bridge carries I-195 over the Seekonk River from Providence to East Providence and serves as a key gateway to the state’s largest city.

Repair work may take three months or more. All westbound lanes will initially be closed and traffic will be diverted, officials said.

Tuesday’s closure caused major traffic delays in the Providence area. About 100,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day.
