Arizona to add 842 new parking spaces statewide

December 11, 20230

The Arizona Department of Transportation has announced a plan to add more than 800 new truck parking spaces in areas with the greatest need.

The Truck Parking Implementation Plan proposes the construction of new and expansion of existing truck stops throughout the state.

Recommended locations were determined based on areas with the highest demand for truck parking. The locations include existing rest areas as well as three new “safe parking areas” within existing highways. Six of the recommended new parking spots are located along I-10, three along I-40 and one along I-8.

Projects were prioritized for implementation based on existing and future available funding. These include:

  • I-10 Burnt Well Rest Area, 103 spaces
  • I-40 Meteor Crater Rest Area, 140 spaces
  • I-10B-10/SR186 TI Safe Lot, 127 spaces
  • I-40 Crazy Creek Safe Lot, 176 spaces
  • I-10 Ehrenberg Rest Area, 53 spaces
  • I-10 San Simon Rest Area, 80 spaces
  • I-10 Bouse Wash Rest Area, 55 spaces
  • I-40 Seligman Safe Lot, 72 spaces
  • I-10 Sacaton Rest Area, 20 spaces
  • I-8Mohawk Rest Area, 16 spaces

Parking in an additional seven locations could be implemented subject to future funding.

Earlier this year, ADOT awarded $18 million in additional NHFP funding through the 2023 State Recreation Areas Plan to expand the state’s five recreation areas.
