Northern California mountain roads closed due to winter storm

March 6, 20230

On March 5, a storm swept across the state, causing snow in the Sierra Nevada and rain in the valleys.

At least three ski mountains in the Tahoe area – Heavenly, Homewood and Sugar Bowl – were closed Sunday due to traveler safety concerns, resort officials said.

More than 30 inches of snow fell in 24 hours, with up to 4 feet of rain expected all week.

Search crews rescued several people stranded in mountain communities, and some Southern Californians may have remained trapped in their homes for days after the snowfall proved too heavy to handle for most ploughs.

I-80 and several other routes in the Lake Tahoe area near Nevada are closed to traffic. Brigades are actively working to clear transport links.

A state of emergency has been declared in 13 counties.
