Study showed big mistrust level of unmanned vehicles

AAA study on automated vehicles showed that most Americans are afraid of high-tech machines.

The study notes that over the past year, the level of distrust of advanced technologies’ drivers in the automotive industry has increased from 55% to 68%. Four out of ten drivers in the US would be against the use of modern driver assistance systems (ADA) and unmanned vehicles.

«We didn’t expect such a dramatic drop in confidence from previous years,» said Greg Brannon, AAA’s director of automotive research. “While given the number of high-profile accidents that have occurred due to over-reliance on modern automotive technology, this is not all that surprising.”

What is a fully autonomous vehicle?

This is a vehicle that can work without human intervention. The driver is not required to drive the vehicle all the time and is not required to be present in the vehicle while driving.

What are Advanced Driver Assistance (ADA) Systems?

ADA combines braking, acceleration and steering through the combined use of adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist.

ADAS include blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking.

The AAA found that 22% of Americans expect driver assistance systems with names like Autopilot, ProPILOT or Pilot Assist to be able to drive a car on their own without any supervision, indicating a gap in consumer understanding.

Officials are urging automakers to work hard to create an environment that encourages the use of more advanced automotive technology in a safe, secure and educational manner. This includes the consistent naming of automotive systems available to consumers today.
