New York City to significantly increase highway tolls

September 19, 20230

New York State Thruway officials have announced massive toll increases on state highways over the next three years.

The New York State Thruway Authority Board of Directors voted to increase toll rates by 5% for E-ZPass customers effective January 1, 2024.

From January 1, 2027, there will be another increase of 5%. By 2027, E-ZPass and mail-in fares outside New York City will increase to 8.6 cents per mile for both groups.

This is the first overall toll increase for E-ZPass users in 14 years.

Toll increases will also occur in 2024 and 2027 on the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. For E-ZPass customers, the toll will increase by $0.50 each year through 2027.

In 2027, the base rate for E-ZPass in New York City for passenger cars will be $7.75.

The reason for the increase in fees is the lack of federal, state and local funding and the age of the infrastructure requiring improvements.

Thruway Authority Board Chairwoman Joan M. Mahoney stated, “The Thruway Authority does not receive any special federal, state or local tax revenue and relies primarily on toll funds to maintain and operate a highway that is one of the safest and most reliable in the world. toll roads in the country.”
