Louisiana restricts truck traffic in construction zone on I-20

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and the Louisiana State Police (LSP) would like to remind motorists of the current restrictions regarding large commercial motor vehicles in the construction zone on I-20 in Bossier City.

Recent incidents involving 18-wheelers have led to the closure of sections of I-20, which is already reduced to a single lane in the rehabilitation area stretching from Hamilton Road to Industrial Drive. These closures often extend for several hours due to the extensive efforts required to clear these vehicles, causing significant disruptions to traffic in the region and potentially hampering construction progress.

The DOTD and LSP have been advising both regular motorists and truck drivers to utilize the primary detour route, I-220, since the commencement of the major reconstruction project in September 2023. In December 2023, it was decided to implement a ban on large commercial motor vehicles traveling through the construction zone.

This decision was made in consideration of the safety of all road users and to ensure the smooth continuation of construction during Phase 2, which involved the installation of concrete barriers and narrower bridge crossings.

The prohibition on large commercial vehicles was enacted to minimize risks and optimize project progress. To date, the LSP has issued over 200 warnings and citations to drivers who have disregarded the numerous signs indicating the restriction on trucks using I-20, and the recommended use of the I-220 detour.

It is crucial for all drivers to remain vigilant regarding changing traffic conditions, especially within construction zones.
