Process of getting CDL improved in some states

New updates designed by InnovateOhio and the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles will provide advanced online CDL services.

Ohio CDL holders not only avoid waiting time and lines at Deputy Registrar’s offices, but they can renew their license simply by clicking the button and receive a new license by mail.

The updated testing will more accurately require knowledge of modern vehicles and the skills required for CDL holders to operate a vehicle safely.

Additionally, the extension of the permit period for commercial training was increased from six months to one year.

“These CDL enhancements for Ohio truckers are the latest in a series of BMV innovations developed in partnership with InnovateOhio,” said Charlie Norman, Ohio BMV Registrar. “To date, this modernization has saved Ohioans more than 4.5 million trips to deputy registrars and more than 500 000 hours of standing in line.”

There are more than 380 000 valid commercial driver’s licenses in the state, according to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

In September, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced a $48 million grant to expand CDL driver training opportunities and improve the CDL process.

FMCSA said the grant will help states expedite the issuance and renewal of CDLs while ensuring the sharing of conviction and disqualification data.
