US is changing CDL renewal process for truckers

March 8, 20230

Some state legislators are introducing an online CDL renewal option for truck drivers. One of the first states to adopt the innovation was Idaho.

On March 6, the State Department of Transportation announced it was expanding its online process to renew state-issued driver’s licenses. CDL owners will be added to them.

State officials say the change will save truckers time and “reduce the amount of traffic at local county DMV offices.”

The change is the result of HB 9, which was signed into law by governor Brad Little on February 23rd.

The adopted Law on Reduction of Bureaucratic Red tape will simplify or cancel two existing rules. First of all, it is aimed at changing and simplifying the process of renewing driving licenses.

The bill also allows the Idaho Internal Revenue Service to share residency information with ITD for the purposes of issuing driver’s licenses. This is a federal requirement to renew the CDL.

Craig Roberts, commercial vehicle maintenance manager at DMV Idaho, said the industry will respond positively to the innovation.

“People in the trucking industry know that time is money,” said Craig Roberts, “so any time that can be saved in the process of renewing a driver’s license is very important and valuable for commercial drivers.”

The State will begin the online renewal of the CDL on July 1. In accordance with the Idaho Administrative Procedure Act, a public comment period will be established to review concerns and receive feedback regarding online driver’s license renewal criteria.

ELDT and CDL opportunities for entry-level drivers also exist online. For detailed information, please contact only official service providers who are in the national registry.
