How to protect your cargo from theft on Memorial Day

Cargo theft recording company CargoNet says cargo is stolen frequently on Memorial Day weekend.

From 2016 and 2020, 143 cargo thefts were recorded from the Thursday prior Memorial Day to the Wednesday after.

Thief activity on Memorial Day 2020 weekend increased 35% over 2019. The stolen cargo in each case was worth an average of $ 308,308 and the cost of the five thefts exceeded US $ 1 million.

CargoNet reports that 15% of reported thefts occurred on Monday. The most common items were alcoholic beverages, seafood and meat products.

The company also reports about the extreme risk in transporting computer electronics shipments through California. Thefts of these goods increased 443% between September 2020 and May 2021 compared to the same period the previous year.

To protect cargo from theft, truck drivers must adhere to the “red zone” rule and avoid stopping within 250 miles of the pickup.
