Volvo opens new autonomous truck office in Texas

Volvo has opened an office in Texas, in preparation for commercial autonomous transport hubs.

According to the company, the Fort Worth office will be designed to create the first autonomous freight corridors that will run from Dallas Fort Worth to El Paso and from Dallas to Houston.

To prepare for the commercial launch, Volvo Autonomous Solutions (VAS) began transporting the first shipments for DHL and Uber Freight to test aspects of the transport solution and establish frameworks and procedures for safe operation.

The Autonomous Transportation Solutions (ATS) offered by the company include the hardware, software and services needed to perform autonomous transport operations, according to a press release. On highways, the solution operates on a node-to-hub basis, where autonomous trucks take over some of the traffic on the highway, working at any time of the day or night between interchange nodes, while drivers perform local operations.

Sasko Tsuklev, Head of Road Solutions at Volvo, said the company’s goal with VAS is to create a new source of industry capacity that will partly alleviate the burden of growing freight demand while also allowing local drivers to switch to short-term jobs that will keep them closer to home.

This will greatly improve the efficiency of the entire supply chain and benefit everyone in the transport industry.
