Rest area opens in Arizona with expanded truck parking

Last week, Sunset-Point Truck Rest was re-opened along I-17 after a long closure.

The location is located along I-17 between Black Canyon City and Cordes Junction. The opening was part of a project by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to upgrade toilets, water systems, and add truck parking spaces.

The project refurbished the sundial memorial in the recreation area, dedicated to ADOT employees who died while serving in the state of Arizona.

To improve capacity and accessibility, the $7.5 million project included the renovation and reopening of the original restroom building, which had been closed since the new building opened in 2010. The toilets have new and upgraded fixtures, doors, hand dryers.

The Sunset Point Rest Area serves over a million visitors a year, according to ADOT.

“Due to Sunset Point’s popularity and location, ADOT has proposed a temporary I-17 rest area nearby on Badger Springs Road while repairs are being made,” ADOT officials said. “The Badger Springs temporary site will now be closed. During the renovation, Sunset Point was also open to commercial traffic with limited services.”
