New Mexico to ban truck parking on public roads

Patrol in the southeastern city of Hobbs, NM, is warning truck drivers about a new parking ordinance.

Hobbs previously approved a new ordinance banning heavy trucks/trailers from parking on public roads for “safety” reasons.

For the first 30 days after this order goes into effect, Hobbs Police Department Police Officers, Code Enforcement Officers, and Police Service Assistants will only educate and inform the public about this order.

The next 30 days will include information and, if necessary, warnings. The general execution of the decree will begin on July 1, 2023. This regulation will apply to the following vehicles, as defined by the DOT large truck classes:

• Class 7 – heavy truck 26,001 – 33,000 pounds. Autocar ACMD, GMC C7500, Peterbilt 220 and 337, Ford F-750, HINO 338.

• Class 8 – heavy truck over 33,001 lbs. Trucks with trailers Autocar ACX, International WorkStar, Kenworth T600, Kenworth T660, Kenworth T680, Peterbilt 579, Peterbilt 389 fall into this category.

• Class 9 – Super Heavy/Special Truck over 33,001 lbs. Usually class 8 tracks with special features, i.e. ACX 12×6, International WorkStar, Western Star 6900 (6900XD or 6900TS).

In addition, all trailers, whether powered or not, coupled or uncoupled, longer than 20 feet, will be prohibited from parking on any public street. Violators face a fine or evacuation of an incorrectly parked truck or trailer.
