Truck drivers will be required to pay to enter parts of Manhattan

New York plans to charge tolls in the Central Business District below 60th Street in Manhattan.

Passenger car drivers entering Manhattan south of 60th Street during the day will be charged $15, small trucks will be charged $24, and large trucks will be charged $36.

Taxi drivers will charge passengers an additional $1.25 to enter the toll zone, and passengers using app-based taxi services will pay an additional $2.50.

The Traffic Mobility Review Board, the New York State body tasked with advising the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) on toll issues, will offer discounts for travel between 21:00 and 05:00, as well as discounts for drivers with low incomes who frequently travel to the area.

A plan to impose congestion tolls, over which neighboring New Jersey has filed a lawsuit, would be the first such program in the United States if it is approved by transportation officials early next year.

Officials say introducing a congestion charge will improve air quality and reduce traffic. This rule will be introduced by the spring of 2024, after a vote by transport authorities.

“Without this plan, we will be suffocated by our own traffic for a long time, and the MTA will not have the funds it needs to provide quality service,” said Carl Weisbrod, chairman of the Traffic Review Board.
