Section of I-40 will be restricted to traffic for several years

October 31, 20220

North Carolina state officials announced construction work on the I-40 section, which will begin in November 2022 and last at least a couple of years.

Crews will begin replacing aging bridges along I-40 between the Tennessee-North Carolina state line and Asheville. The focus will be on the White Oak Road and Jonathan Creek bridges as they reach the end of their useful lives.

The new bridges will also include crossings for wild animals that will allow them cross the road safely away from vehicles.

Construction work will take place from November to May 2024, with all lanes temporarily reopening in 2023 for the period June to October. The rest of the time, one lane will operate.

NCDOT strongly encourages drivers to plan for detours over weekends and holidays, but be aware that other routes will take much longer.
