In North Carolina AI will detect distracted drivers

July 22, 20230

The North Carolina Highway Patrol (NCHP) introduced a new technology to detect truckers who are distracted from driving and violate safety rules.

The equipment will be placed on I-40 to reduce distracted driving, and the technology will be targeted at commercial vehicle drivers.

According to the NCHP report, the new technology uses cameras to take pictures of the license plates of a passing truck, as well as the condition of the driver in the cab.

Artificial intelligence is able to recognise whether the trucker is using a phone while driving, whether he is wearing a seat belt, and so on.

After a few seconds, the information will be sent to the police station nearby. The technology could even provide the police with a “countdown timer” showing when a vehicle will pass the police.

Fines for violations can be up to $100.

The system is provided by Acucensus, a company headquartered in Australia.
