Colorado to test snow chain law

On Friday, October 13th, Colorado State Patrol will be conducting a check on I-70 eastbound at Exit 133 in Dotsero.

Officers involved in the inspection will focus on enforcing Colorado’s tire chain law and educating truck drivers about the dangers of Glenwood Canyon’s variable speed limits and right-lane driving restrictions.

Colorado Department of Transportation CDOT requires drivers of commercial vehicles (GCWR/GVWR 16,001 pounds or more) traveling on I-70 between mile markers 133 and 259 to have a sufficient number of tire chains from September 1 to May 31 of each year.

The fine for not having chains on a vehicle is $50 plus a $17 surcharge. The fine for not using chains while the law is in effect is $500 plus a $79 surcharge. The fine for blocking a highway resulting from failure to comply with this law is $1,000 plus a $157 surcharge.

“Compliance with the tire chain law for commercial vehicle drivers and the passenger vehicle tire traction law can occur on I-70 at any time, and drivers need to be prepared,” said Sergeant Troy Kessler.
