Firefighters are investigating a vehicle explosion that occurred on a highway in New Jersey on Monday morning.

The incident took place around 6 am on April 17 in Union Township, New Jersey.

As the truck carrying the cargo container was moving east along Route 22 on its way to the port in Elizabeth, the boat inside the container caught fire and then exploded, officials said.

Union fire chief Greg Ricciardi told that the container’s doors were blown off and thrown 150 feet in the explosion.

Route 22 was closed for most of the morning rush hour before the highway reopened.

The incident is being investigated.
