Researchers launch polling on cannabis effects on truckers

February 25, 20230

The American Institute for Transportation Research created a survey for carriers about the cannabis legalization`s influence on workers in the trucking area.

This study was named by the ATRI Research Advisory Committee as a top focus in 2022 and will build out on the 2019 ATRI study on the influence of marijuana legalization on road-traffic safety.

Employees and managers of trucking companies who know about drug testing methods are asked to share their opinions via an online survey.

ATRI said the study will show insight into the problems truckers face as recreational marijuana use rises in the US. The results should also give ideas about the approaches that the industry can take to address these challenges.

“States are legalizing recreational use of marijuana,” said Fred Fakkema, vice president of safety and compliance at Zonar Systems and chairman of the American Trucking Association’s Law Enforcement Advisory Board. “These rapid changes directly impact fleets and their workforce; The ATRI study will help quantify this impact.”

Recreational use of marijuana is legal in 21 states, as well as Washington DC, and Guam. Medical marijuana is legal in 38 states. However, marijuana use is still prohibited for those with CDL.

The ATRI survey is available online here and will be open until March 17th.
