10 Most Unsafe States for Truck Drivers in the US: Research

A new study has revealed which states are unsafe for truck drivers.

Using analysis of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the percentage of fatal crashes involving large trucks was determined for each state.

With the highest percentage of fatal accidents involving large trucks, the state of Wyoming is in the lead.

1. Wyoming – 18.97%

 2. Idaho – 16.33%

3. Nebraska – 15.92%

4. Iowa – 14.35%

5. North Dakota – 13.24%

6. South Dakota – 12.57%

7. Alaska – 12.5%

8. Kansas – 11.94%

9. Indiana – 11.8%

10. Texas – 11.39%

According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, 39 people died in road accidents in 2022. A year ago, this number was 26 people.

Of the 31 fatal accidents in Wyoming this year, 13 were commercial vehicle related, about 42%. Nearly half of the fatal crashes in Wyoming this year were due to not wearing seat belts.

The lowest percentage of fatal accidents involving large trucks is indicated in the District of Columbia:

 2. Michigan – 4.72%

3. Vermont – 5%

4. Hawaii – 5.26%

5. Delaware – 5.56%

6. Massachusetts – 5.74%

7. Connecticut – 6.02%

8. New Jersey – 6.6%

9. Maryland – 6.97%

10. Nevada – 7.1%

According to NHTSA, 42,795 people died in crashes in 2022, down 0.3% from 42,939 in 2021.

Nevertheless, the road traffic deaths are still significantly higher than in pre-pandemic times.
