Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls go up January 8

January 4, 20230

On January 8, there will be a 5% increase in tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Toll increase is required to complete the PA Turnpike overhaul.

For a Class 8 five-axle truck with E-ZPass, the cost will rise to $32.97. Without E-ZPass, the price will rise from $64 to $67.20.

E-ZPass and Toll By Plate fares for passenger cars and commercial vehicles will be rounded down to the next 10 cents after the toll increase goes into effect.

Toll revenue also funds round-the-clock operation of the toll road, as well as system improvements, including the construction of new interchanges, reconstruction and expansion projects to restore and widen the roadway from four to six lanes.

PTC also recalls Law 112, signed into law November 3, 2022, which allows vehicle registrations to be suspended for owners with four or more overdue toll bills or unpaid tolls of $250 or more.

Penalties for driving a vehicle with a suspended registration could include:

• Mandatory three-month driver’s license suspension.

• Fine up to $500 plus legal fees.

• Cancellation of the vehicle insurance policy and an increase in the cost of insurance.

• A record of the violation in the owner’s driving history.

“Vehicle owners who think they may be at risk of having their vehicle registration suspended should take immediate action to avoid these costly consequences,” PTC CEO Mark Compton said. “Contact us today to make good on any unpaid tolls before you can no longer legally operate your vehicle.”

PTC approved a 5% fare increase for E-ZPass and Toll By Plate customers on August 2, 2022.

E-ZPass and Toll By Plate fares for passenger cars and commercial vehicles will be rounded down to the next 10 cents after the toll increase goes into effect.

“The PTC has been forced to increase tolls annually through the foreseeable future to meets its financial obligations under Act 44 of 2007, Compton said. “It’s worth noting that, even with these ongoing annual increases, our per-mile toll rate continues to be below the midline compared with rates of other U.S. tolling agencies.”

“It’s worth noting that, despite annual increases, the PA Turnpike’s per-mile toll rate is still below the national average for passenger vehicles and most commercial vehicles,” he added. “In addition, other U.S. tolling agencies have adopted our practice of annual rate increases to meet rising financial obligations.”
