6 ways to improve truck driver safety

November 19, 20220

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) conducted a survey on driver safety in the trucking industry.

Some of those who participated in the survey presented solutions to the problem of unsafe behavior of drivers on the road. These solutions include additional parking spaces, increased security measures at trucking facilities, improved intercoms, allowing drivers to carry firearms, personal safety training, and educational materials to raise awareness.

It’s no surprise that truck drivers need more parking spaces. FMCSA survey results indicate that unusual and other unusual behavior may occur due to limited parking options. This is because the driver had to look for a place to park his trucks at night, where they ended up, for example, in abandoned parking lots that were discovered as a result of the detention of the detainees.

Another way to reduce driver parking in unsafe locations is to improve communication between drivers and their fleet managers. When there are delays in the delivery process, drivers may have to park at any nearby location – this becomes a problem due to the lack of official truck stops.

One solution is that adding more lighting and other safety features may be an easier task than creating new parking lots. Well-lit walkways from parking lots to gas stations and the store itself, toilets located in unprotected areas, and security patrols on the ground should be a priority to improve safety in the trucking industry.

Meanwhile, drivers said they would feel safer if they were allowed to carry firearms. However, this is outside the policy of most transport companies and therefore not possible for many drivers. Not only do drivers want to take their safety into their own hands by carrying firearms, but they are also willing to receive personal safety training.

Truck drivers also find that educational materials designed to raise awareness can be useful for safety.

Spread the word on how to know when a crime is about to happen, how to stop it safely, and how to report the time. Creating procedures to take crime reports seriously is another way the trucking industry can improve overall safety practices.

Keeping drivers safe is one of the most important responsibilities of trucking industry. Making some of these decisions will help improve the safety of drivers on the road.
