Virginia to change left-lane law for trucks

January 12, 20230

Virginia law could expand the restriction on trucks not driving in the left lane.

The proposed bill could expand the restrictions to include interstate highways where the speed limit is at least 55 miles per hour.

The law already prohibits trucks from driving on the left-lane of any Interstate with more than two lanes where the speed limit is a minimum of 65 mph.

The restriction also applies to driving on the leftmost lane on any interstate with more than two lanes in Planning District Eight and on I-81 regardless of the speed limit.

In addition, commercial vehicles must travel in the rightmost lane at least 15 mph below the posted speed limit. This applies to all interstate roads with one or two lanes.

Bill HB1535 is pending in committee in the House of Representatives.

The Owner-Operators Independent Association (OOIDA) objected to the proposal because restricting trucks to certain lanes creates transportation problems and endangers passenger safety.
