The Australian insurance provider Budget Direct has recently published a study about tolling practices on hundreds of roads around the world.

More than 400 toll highways were examined to determine the most expensive and cheapest one. The highest possible passenger vehicle toll was taken into account.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike ranked #1 in the list of the most expensive toll roads in the world. The New York State Thruway is at #8, the Florida Turnpike at #9, the Ohio Turnpike at #14, Texas State Highway 130 at #17, and the New Jersey Turnpike at #18.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike fares increase annually. The last increase was in January 2021.

In 2018, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) filed suit against the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. According to them, the “excessive” toll increases hampered commerce between the states. That suit was dismissed on April 4, 2019, in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. OOIDA is working on an appeal.

The cheapest road of the U.S. Budget Direct named the Boulevard Bridge, which is also known as the “nickel bridge”.
