Mass Vehicle Crash Involving Big Rigs On I-81 In Pennsylvania
At least three people died in a crash involving 50-60 vehicles in Pennsylvania.
The accident happened on Monday around 10:30 am on I-81 near Minersville, about 100 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The state police estimate the number of vehicles involved in the accident ranges from 40 to 60, including big rigs.
Dr. David J. Moylan, Schuylkill County Coroner, said three deaths had been confirmed.
John Blickley, the agency’s deputy emergency coordinator, said ambulance workers from four counties about 20 injured patients to area hospitals. According to him, three tractors with an unknown cargo and several small vehicles were on fire when the rescuers arrived.
Officials believe the accident was due to poor visibility and heavy snowfall.
The National Weather Service warned of “numerous snow flurries with very poor visibility.”
