Kansas temporarily closes I-70: detour routes

August 8, 20220

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) closes I-70 westbound for three weeks.

Beginning Aug. 15, KDOT will close I-70 westbound for all traffic from 8th Street to Topeka Boulevard.

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), the closure is needed while sidewalk repairs are completed on the PolkQuincy Viaduct bridge.

Traffic on I-70 westbound will follow the signed detours and be routed south to I-470, north to K-4 to US 24 to US 75, or drivers can use the local street detour from Madison Avenue to Sixth Street to Topeka Boulevard.

Eastbound I-70 will remain open, but will be limited to one lane.

“Working in partnership with the City of Topeka, KDOT has studied construction zones in the area and studied traffic patterns. Traffic congestion will be increased, but the marked bypasses will be able to handle them,” the KDOT said in a statement.

As the closure will last approximately three weeks, drivers should expect delays and plan their routes accordingly.

The Polk Quincy Viaduct project is scheduled to start in early 2025.
