Indiana eliminates speed limits difference on state roads

January 10, 20230

Indiana state legislator plans to level speed limits for all vehicles on the state’s fastest roads for the fifth time. Each of the previous four bills was introduced in the House of Representatives but did not pass through the committee.

The bill will increase the maximum speed limit from 65 mph to 70 mph on the following sections:

• U.S. 24 between Huntington and Logansport

• U.S. 25 between Lafayette and Logansport

• U.S. 24 from Ohio border to I-469 interchange

• U.S. 30 from Ohio border to I-469 interchange

Introduced by Senator Jim Toms (R-Wadesville), the bill will affect the approximately 124,000 state-registered vehicles and thousands more that enter Indiana’s highways daily.

The Indiana Department of Transportation has previously said that if the bill passes, the 65 mph speed limit signs would need to be changed.

Replacement road signs will cost the state between $10,000 and $12,500. Experts estimate that changes to speed limits should result in fewer speeding tickets.

Bill SB13 will be considered by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Transportation.

Now Indiana law allows cars to drive at 70 miles per hour, while the speed limit for vehicles over 26,000 pounds is 65 miles per hour.
