FMCSA asks for driver feedback on CMV electronic identification
In an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on September 23, the FMCSA is asking commercial vehicle drivers to comment on the introduction of electronic identification technology into trucks.
The device is capable of wirelessly transmitting unique identification numbers when requested by the security of a federal or state carrier.
This technology can be used to identify a parked truck or commercial vehicle in motion.
The agency said they are «considering amendments to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the roadside inspection program by better enabling law enforcement to focus their efforts on high-risk carriers and drivers.»
The FMCSA’s move towards electronic identification technology is in response to a petition from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA).
The FMCSA is asking the public to comment on aspects of the possible use of the CMV electronic identification number, including the possibility of using other existing technologies such as ELD. You can leave a public comment at the link.
