A truck driver was injured when a piece of ice from another truck shattered his windshield on Highway 401 in Ontario on Friday.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported the incident around 11 am on January 27.

According to police, a truck traveling on Highway 401 near Courtice Road was hit by a piece of ice flying off another truck.

The ice broke the windshield on the driver’s side. OPP reports that the truck driver was injured and was hospitalized.

Today many states have special laws and penalties for commercial vehicles traveling with snowy roofs and ice.

Violation fines range from $75 to $1,500 plus a court appearance.

Fleet managers and facility operators must be aware of their state’s laws and have processes in place to ensure company and driver compliance. Snow and ice should be removed from the trucks before them leave the yard.

This should be standard procedure, regardless of applicable law.
