Authorities change rules for installing devices on windscreens

July 14, 20210

US authorities are changing zones` sizes that are allowed to use for the installation of safety devices on the inside of the truck`s windscreens.

In the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM), devices such as cameras can be installed 8.5 inches below the top edge of the area covered by the screen-wipers. This is twice as much as the current figures.

The gap above the bottom edge of the area covered by the wipers remains unchanged – no more than 7 inches. Still the device shouldn`t cover the driver’s view of the road, signs or traffic lights.

It remains prohibited to install antennas and similar devices more than 6 inches below the top edge of the windscreen.

“The proposed amendments don`t impose stricter requirements, but provide temporary exceptions,” said the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

“Importantly, these amendments don`t require the use of any devices, they allow free use installed in a location that will increase their effectiveness without affecting safety.”
